About Rufus
Quick answer: Rufus is a small utility for Windows that formats a USB drive and makes it bootable. Newest recorded version: 4.15. Downloads link to the official publisher.
Rufus is a small utility for Windows that formats a USB drive and makes it bootable. It was created by Pete Batard and is licensed under the GNU GPL version 3. It is a single executable file that runs without installation, and it is commonly used to put an operating system installer, a recovery tool or a Linux live system onto a USB stick. You pick the USB device, choose an ISO or disk image, and Rufus offers the partition scheme (MBR or GPT) and target system (BIOS or UEFI) that suit the image. It can create Windows installation media, and it includes a download option for Microsoft's official Windows ISO files. A persistent partition can be set for some Linux images, and bad-block checks test the drive. Creating the drive erases everything on it. Rufus is only available for Windows. Download the portable executable from rufus.ie, plug in the USB drive and run the program. Check the device list carefully, because the drive will be erased, then select the ISO and let Rufus choose the partition scheme or change it if your computer needs the other one. For Windows installers, Rufus asks about optional customisations on the final step. Eject the drive from Windows when the status bar shows Ready.

Our review
Rufus is a practical choice when you need to prepare a USB installer on Windows quickly, and it handles UEFI and older BIOS systems well. It erases the selected drive, so double-check the device name before starting. It works only on Windows, and for macOS or Linux you need another program such as balenaEtcher. Use ISO files from the original publisher and compare their checksums. Some operating systems or images need particular settings, and the Rufus FAQ explains the common failures. Download only from rufus.ie; look-alike sites exist.
