qBittorrent is a BitTorrent client for downloading and sharing files over the peer-to-peer BitTorrent protocol. It is open source, released under the GNU GPL version 2 or later, is built with Qt and uses the libtorrent library, and contains no advertising. Christophe Dumez started the project in 2006. The client supports magnet links and torrent files, sequential downloading, selecting individual files inside a torrent, bandwidth limits, queues and IP filtering. A built-in search engine can query several search sites through plug-ins, and an RSS reader can download new items automatically. A web interface allows remote control from a browser, which is useful for a home server. Encryption of peer connections can be set to prefer or require. BitTorrent itself is a legal technology widely used to distribute large files such as Linux installers, but sharing copyrighted material without permission is illegal in many places. qBittorrent also runs on Linux. Install from qbittorrent.org and pick sensible defaults in Tools, then Options: choose the download folder and, if you use a VPN, bind the client to the VPN interface. Add a magnet link or torrent file from the File menu. Set upload and download limits so the connection stays usable for other tasks. Check the files in a torrent before opening them, and scan downloads with your security software.

Our review

I tested qBittorrent 5.2.4 on my Windows 11 laptop. It’s clean, free and has no ads, and the web interface makes it a good fit if you want to run it on a headless machine. It’s the wrong choice if you want something simple. The interface is plain and has a lot of settings, so beginners who expect a guided, one-click app may find it confusing. Search also isn’t ready out of the box: the plug-ins come from third parties and are off by default, so you have to set them up yourself and turn on only the ones you trust. Keep privacy in mind too. Other people in a torrent can see your IP address, so some users route traffic through a VPN and bind qBittorrent to that connection. Only download files you’re allowed to share, and get the installer from qbittorrent.org, since lookalike installers have carried malware.
