PeaZip is a free file archiver developed by Giorgio Tani and released under the GNU LGPL version 3. The project says it opens more than 200 archive formats, including ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR, GZ and ISO. It can create 7z, ZIP, TAR, Zstandard, Brotli, BZ2, GZ, WIM, ARC and its own PEA format. RAR is extract-only. Under the hood it builds on the 7-Zip and p7zip code along with Zstandard, Brotli, PAQ and FreeArc, so PeaZip is both a graphical front end and a bundle of those compression engines. You open or create an archive from the main window, from the right-click menu in Explorer or Finder, or by drag and drop. You can pick a compression level, split an archive into volumes, and encrypt it with AES, Twofish or Serpent, using a password, a keyfile or both. It can also test archives, convert one format to another, and securely delete files by overwriting them. A portable package is also offered, and the project says it needs no installation. Pick the installer or the portable package from the official site. To make an archive, right-click files and choose the PeaZip option, set the format and compression level, and add a password if the data is sensitive. To extract, double-click the archive or use the extract menu. For simple everyday zipping, the built-in tools of Windows and macOS are often enough.

Our review
PeaZip suits people who want a graphical archiver with more control than the built-in Windows and macOS tools give them. The window has a lot of options for compression method, volume size and encryption, and a new user may not know which to change; the defaults are fine for ordinary ZIP and 7z work. It cannot make RAR files, so send ZIP or 7z unless the recipient asks for RAR. An encrypted archive cannot be recovered if you lose the password, so keep it somewhere safe. Archives from unknown senders are a common way to spread malware, so scan them before opening what is inside. 7-Zip has a simpler window if you only need to zip and unzip files on Windows.

I tried PeaZip on my Windows Laptop and found it a capable free alternative to WinRAR and 7-Zip with a friendlier interface, though it can’t create RAR files and its many settings make 7-Zip the simpler choice if you only unzip files now and then.
