Flameshot is a free screenshot tool released under the GNU GPL version 3. Flameshot has a configuration dialog for colours, shortcut keys and the save location, and a command-line interface for scripting captures. It runs in the system tray and responds to a keyboard shortcut that you set yourself. Check the project's notes for the limitations of your platform, since some features differ. Install it and start Flameshot so that its icon appears in the system tray, then set a keyboard shortcut for the capture command in the settings. Drag over the area you want, annotate using the toolbar, and press Enter or the copy button. On macOS, allow screen recording in System Settings when asked. If the Windows or macOS build lacks something you need, ShareX or the built-in screenshot tool may suit you better.

Our review

Flameshot is a good pick if you want to annotate screenshots as part of the capture, without opening a separate editor. Windows and macOS builds exist, but some behaviours, such as global keyboard shortcuts, may need manual setup on those systems. It does not record video, so ShareX or OBS Studio is a better fit for that. The upload feature sends images to a third-party host, so review it before using it with sensitive content. Blur only hides what you cover, and the pixelate effect is a better choice than a faint blur for hiding text.
