About PuTTY
Quick answer: PuTTY is a terminal client for connecting to remote machines over SSH, Telnet, rlogin and raw sockets, and to devices over a serial port. Newest recorded version: 0.85. Downloads link to the official publisher.
PuTTY is a terminal client for connecting to remote machines over SSH, Telnet, rlogin and raw sockets, and to devices over a serial port. Simon Tatham wrote it, and it has been developed since 1999 with a small team of contributors. The licence is MIT, so the code can be reused freely. The download is a package of small programs. PuTTY is the main terminal, PuTTYgen creates and converts SSH key pairs, Pageant holds keys in memory so you do not retype passphrases, and PSCP and PSFTP copy files over SSH from the command line. Sessions can be saved with their settings, such as the host name, port, colours and key file. PuTTY is also commonly used to connect to routers, switches and single-board computers over serial cables. PuTTY is mainly distributed for Windows, and Unix versions exist. There are no official macOS installers listed here. Download PuTTY from the author's page, and choose the 64-bit MSI installer for most modern Windows computers, or the standalone executables if you prefer a portable copy. Enter the host name, make sure SSH is selected, give the session a name and press Save. Create keys with PuTTYgen and load them in Pageant if you want to avoid typing a passphrase repeatedly. If you only need a basic SSH session, the OpenSSH client built into Windows may be enough.

Our review
PuTTY remains useful for Windows users who need a lightweight SSH or serial client, especially for network equipment. Its interface is plain and settings are tucked into a long category tree, and it lacks tabs, so you end up with a separate window for each session. Windows 10 and 11 now include an OpenSSH client for simple SSH sessions, and Windows Terminal offers tabs. Keep PuTTY updated, because security fixes are released from time to time, and download it only from the author's page or the official mirror, not from advertised copies.
